Lessons Learned meeting after September 2011 Drifter Cruise to Station Aloha, Hawaii

  • Shipping van fan velocity needs to be turned down if we are to work inside. Noise is not too bad, but air velocity stirs up lots of dust.
  • Van left MBARI Aug 17, arrived Hawaii Aug 25. KM deployed Sep 6. This was barely enough time to get everything ready. In future, when running PCR, we need 3 weeks minimum to prepare.
  • MFB preparations. We should get it ready, but once arrived, do full runs and spot-compare to pre-shipping.
  • Must have extra tools here at home, so traveling group does not clean us out.
  • Rigging box spares in case we deploy back home at same time.
  • This deployment (Sep 7-17) used 1400 minutes of Iridium air time. Was slow and dropped frequently. Seas were calm so no need for constant engineering data to be transferred.
    • Was discussion of how to compress files to more efficiently send via Iridium. Perhaps .JPG conversion of TIFF's?
  • Retrieved NO DATA from the PAR sensor. PAR log says it rec'd a ctrl-C character, which stopped data logging. Perhaps happened when ESP re-powered? We need either NO comms to PAR so it's always running, or TOTAL comms, so we can query it and restart if necessary.
  • Important to time-sync all ADCP's with the ship.
